How to Avoid International Moving Scams
Red flags when hiring an overseas mover, and the checks that protect your shipment and deposit.
Red flags
- A quote much lower than others, given without an inventory or survey.
- A large deposit demanded before a written estimate.
- Unclear or missing destination charges.
- No FMC license for a company arranging ocean freight from the U.S.
- Reviews describing goods held until extra fees are paid.
Checks before you book
- Search the company on the FMC's licensed OTI list.
- Check the BBB profile and complaint history.
- Read recent 1-star reviews on Google, Trustpilot and Yelp.
- Get a written, itemized estimate and contract.
- Pay by card when possible.
